Branding Lessons Learned from Actors
Every once in awhile, I get an opportunity to shoot stills on an indie film set. I find this environment ripe for creativity, & the blessing of an indie {in many circumstances a little-or-no-budget} film set is that almost everyone weighs in on varying possibilities for getting a creative scene shot, which makes for an energizing atmosphere where ideas flow. . . it’s an addicting circumstance, all will readily admit. My role as photographer is a small one, but one that inspires me, & largely the reason I make time for a gig. True actors are involved in the energy of ideas, & the premise of financial gain is somewhat less consequential, for the opportunity for creativity runs prior to padding the bank account. {Sometimes. Let’s not...

There’s been a lot of talk about branding rolling around :: how you need to be your brand & how you need to craft it with a story, a look & feel, etc. All this push on brandingbrandingbranding is because that’s what folks remember, even if they can’t remember the products you make {Are they the pinot noir makers or do they have a great blend they produce? Is it breakaway guitars he makes or the harp guitars?} or where, exactly, you’re located. As an artisan, your Brand is You, & so it is always evolving, in a way, becoming better & more succinct :: a moving, growing thing. I’ve been gathering some great material that gives good advice for branding – from the old advice that people don’t buy what you make,...

A few years ago (maybe it was several), I visited a photographic gallery I had come to love. Because I’m a photographer & visual artist at heart, I loved this gallery because it represented excellence in visual capture, art in the moment, envious composition, documentary. I felt inspired to be a better photographer when I saw the works there. I did not feel inspired to buy because I generally do not buy from galleries, but from the artist, & usually after I have a relationship (acquaintance, conviviality, friendly knowledge) with them. In the months prior to my last visit, this shop had had to move around the corner – literally – because of light rail construction on the street where it was located before. The street is all functional...

I’m not a career coach – I’m a brandesigner – but I play one, sometimes, when I talk with clients about their branding & identity. We dig around in ethos {personal philosophy}, motivation {why you are in business}, aura {not really; more like ‘what colour is your parachute’}, & then I talk {& listen} about how to solidify & promote that brand. My own experience as an artisan starts with finding something wonderful that calls to me to make or do, & then it runs the risk of changing, somehow, when I make it a business project. It’s a wonderful start. Naive, almost. We get a wonderful idea, based on our expertise – for a colour combo, a dissonant chord, a wine blend. . . but because we are now an...

Artist : Artisan Painter : winemaker | actor : chef | poet : carpenter | photographer : filmmaker | musician : luthier {The factors being that one creates from ideas & the other creates from something nature has already delivered: grapes, wood, produce, stories, etc.} I get you. Meaning I Get you. I understand how ideas come to you & how driven you are to create when you have a buzz on a great creative idea. I know the self-doubt that comes from wondering if your audience really understands the work you do. I get that you’d like to dispense with all this marketing & networking & just make your art. Because I’ve felt that way myself. So I think we’d make a good team. I want to work with you to build a brand & some...

I haven’t written a blog in a very long time. There are lots of words out here on the Internet, spawning things like narcissism, opinion, posturing, long stories. I just couldn’t ever go there for very long. But I’ve realized that to reach out to the people I want to work with, there needs to be a stream of thought to follow, somewhat of a dialogue; and I may go to email thingys at some point, but for now, this is my canvas. You know who you are. You create from a thought, a dream you had the night before, a theme you want to express. Or you create in tandem with another – usually it is nature – to make another art that comes from an outside source, is beautiful & perhaps useful as well. I see you. I see where you’re...
